Step back in time - reconnect with nature & refresh your soul
Paradise! We are so fortunate to have this beautiful 190 acre historic mountain retreat, and delight in sharing it with others. Dry Run Spirits Distillery is open on site featuring small batch, hand crafted moonshine and brandies! Come for a complimentary apple brandy, maple moonshine, applie pie liqueur or maple nectar tasting, and tour the historic homestead. Our location 3 hours from the DC area makes it an easily accessible destination - bring friends and family for a visit, relax and de-stress.
A SHORT INTRO STORY
This land has sustained families and nourished spirits since the time of the American Indians. The property is known by locals as the Ananias Pitsenbarger Farm, whose family lived here from the 1840s until the 1970s. During that time, this was a self sufficient German Appalachian homestead. The Pitsenbargers were known as "clever" which meant "hospitable" in those days. The road to Harrisonburg VA used to run right by the house, and they frequently served food and cider to passersby. The best and strongest hard cider "had the bugs in it" and was saved for special friends. Many a local came by to help with some work, or traveled through on their way home and got a wee bit sidetracked! Frequently after the cider came out, the fiddle and accordian was produced as well, and singing and dancing ensued. Neighbors in the late 1800s called the place "Loafer's Glory" (probably not a compliment), as a result. We think that name still fits the place perfectly!
EXCITING PROJECTS
We are also a farm, and we still maintain 16 of the 1840s buildings at the historic Ananias Pitsenbarger homestead. We now own the original Dahmer WV post office and its big red barn, across the road. You're welcome to explore the historic buildings, or maybe pick fruit, forage for mushrooms, watch the neighbors put up hay for their livestock. In February you might find us tapping our huge old maple trees to collect sap to make maple moonshine! In 2020 we put in a new 30 tree orchard - new trees from cuttings off our old growth apples. And, since 2021 we've hosted several guest chef farm-to-table meals which featured local WV maple syrup, buckwheat, beef, produce, cider, moonshine, and other local ingredients. Proceeds have benefited our local Pendleton County Farmer's Market.
